A Date to Remember

Have been given 24th November as the day for my CT scan. That's two weeks on Friday.

Better than no scan.

Saw my GP this morning. She's happy with my mental attitude and I explained to her that much of that comes from supportive comments from the blog community. Besides, I never take no for an answer.

My blood pressure is still a bit high 153/90 but I'm otherwise well enough to go under the knife if that is what Plan A turns out to be. No sign of my heart rate problem although I'm not convinced that's been completely cured.

Incredibly tired today through the day although I'm picking up a bit this evening. The plaid and checked trousers are done so its on to sword blades and spear points now.

Have decided not to go to a local show Targe (Kirriemuir) this weekend as that might be stretching my endurance a wee bit. Will aim for Battleground (Stockton-On-Tees) on the 25th, that's the day after my scan so I'll finalise any travelling at the last minute.

Battleground would be the last show of the year so I'll be targeting Vapnartak (York) in February for a flea market day. Some of my stuff has just got to go. I'll try and preview some of my collections on this blog just in case anyone is looking for what I already have.

  2. Hi Jim,

I cannot help but be impressed with your ‘sang froid’ with all this and you have my very best wishes for a speedy recovery or at the very least a return to what passes for normality.

    Take it easy old chap,

    All the best,

    DC

    1. It will take more than a surgeons knife and a few gut stitches to keep me down

  5. Jim,

The two weeks will fly by, and you'll soon be blogging your results ... which we all hope will be very favourable. In the meantime, keep doing as much as you can as often as you can. It will help to keep you in a positive frame of mind.

Please keep us all informed of your progress. You have a lot of friends out here in the blogosphere, and we want to give you as much support as we can ... but don't want to bother you with emails just in case it will tire you.

    All the best,

    Bob

    1. Yes Bob, the fly by of the days will be rapid.

Once I know what the plan is I would hope to be able to blog as I go assuming I can make internet contact wherever it will be.

Blog comments and emails will be equally welcome.

  8. Glad you've got a date. One thing to think about - of course, it's serious, but the fact that they are not rushing things through is (in a way) a positive - if things were really bad they would be in 'let's get him in now' mode. At the moment, it's being looked on as 'routine' rather than 'urgent'. Written down that looks terrible but I think you know what I mean - routine in a professional medical sense.

    We're all thinking of you.

    1. The surgeons I spoke to were quite happy to operate just as soon as a scan was available. I am hoping that means that the surgery backlog is minimal as opposed to something needing done urgently.

  9. Jim, I saw your comment on Mark Dudley's blog. I don't think there's anything I can say to add to what's already been said by your many friends except best of luck.
    Best regards, Matt

    1. Matt, there are not many things that annoy me (incorrect Union flags aside) apart from something that interrupts my painting schedule. SO I'm giving my schedule the highest possible priority. Jim

  10. Jim,
Glad there's progress and a date is set. Sorry I won't see you Saturday but with luck I shall see you at Battleground. Will be interested in seeing what you have surplus to requirements before vapnartak

    1. Happy about the date too, lets get something done.

I drove up to Forfar last month and I felt that I was just at my limit that day and now I have had a bad week last week so best not to try.

I have tons of collections, mostly unfinished which I hope to prioritise and complete to sell-ready state.

      28mm Askaris, 6mm Warhammer Epic, 1:1200 WW2 Coastal Forces, 10mm not-7YW British and Russians, 12mm Medievals, 6mm ACW, 12mm AWI, 1/144th WW1 aircraft, 25mm Ancient Greeks and probably a good few more.

    1. Soon, is the operative word. I would have had my operation last week if everyone else was on the same timetable as me.

  13. Apologies for not having heard about this sooner, but my thoughts are with you Jim. Good luck, and make sure you keep pushing the health services to deliver.

    1. The NHS has delivered a date for my CT scan which was all I was pressing them for so I'm happy about that.

The next thing will be what happens after the diagnoses of the images. There's what they call a multi-disciplinary team involved and I used to take part in similar when I was working (University IT) and never managed to get much agreement.

The last one was quite funny in that it was about the installation and support of a linear accelerator (an X-Ray system heavily dependent on computing) and they wanted a local well experienced IT Professional to co-ordinate things. I was chosen but I said 'no, it can't be me, I'm retiring in 3 months.' Backup? No I don't have one. Replacement? Will have to interview for a candidate. Delay your retirement? No!

I never did find out what happened.

    2. That might have been a nice little earner if you had hired yourself back on external consultant rates!

    3. One of the conditions of my retirement package was not re-employed within 2 years.

  14. I, too am glad you have a date for the CT. Lets hope it shows nothing too surprising and the op goes ahead ok and goes well.
Keep us informed, we all care about you!

  15. I expect that if they decide to operate then it will be another 7-10 days to find theatre time.

I expect it will be all over by Christmas. Where have I heard that before?

  16. hope it all goes well and come over and say hello at Battleground.

    1. Had a bad day today, more bleeding and a feeling of unwellness. Doctor is happy enough with me but ordered some more blood tests.

      Battleground is still an aspiration.

  17. I had to have half my right kidney removed back in 2010. The worst bit about the operation was the hospital food. After a week I had enough and escaped. They did give me a nice bag of pills to take home with me though. I now have a nice scar that looks like a shark bite. Wargaming and model painting kept me going. A long with all the great friends I've made in the hobby. Remember, Worse things happen at sea. : )

    1. Thanks Neil, I understand it is not uncommon these days. In fact I have just been emailing a wargames chum who had one of his kidneys removed a few years ago. He's still going strong.

I'm on a Weight Watcher diet at the moment so hospital food might be a step up. I am expecting to have key-hole surgery so shouldn't be too bad for scars, I have a good few already.

Just about every friend I have left is a wargamer since I retired from work a few years ago.
